Last week, the Micro:bit Educational Foundation shared the news about a new Python Editor for the micro:bit that has been in the works.
The aim was to create a text-first editor that was more friendly and approachable than the current version.
Whilst the editor is still early on in the development process, the foundation want to get feedback from the community, whether that be finding bugs or providing suggestions for future developments.
You can access the alpha release here: https://python.microbit.org/v/alpha
The alpha release has feature parity with the current editor however the Foundation are looking into working on the following in the future:
- Adding supporting documention and educational content to the sidebar to help people explore micro:bit features in the context of MicroPython
- Detecting and highlighting syntax errors
- Effective autocomplete for the micro:bit API
- Build upon the research done into Simulation
The code is all open source, so if you'd like to follow the work being done on the new editor you can do so over on GitHub
The current editor will stay live until a wider beta testing program has completed in the future.
